In this blog entry, the professional New Jersey carpet and rug cleaning team here at Aladdin Oriental Rug will detail the best practices for using vacuums to keep your carpets and rugs clean.
Vacuuming Best Practices
- Use the right vacuum– Different carpet / rug types have different vacuum needs. Neer vacuum wool carpets with a vacuum with a beater bar, buy synthetic carpets that are best matched with a carpet with a beater bar. Look up the Carpet and Rug Institute’s SOA certified vacuum web page for a list of tested and tried vacuums they recommend
- Vacuum Height Adjustment– Set your vacuum for the best height for your flooring. If you can’t do this, set your vacuum to the highest setting, and lower it one notch at a tie. When the vacuum slightly pulls itself forward on your carpet, that is the ideal height for vacuuming. We recommend dropping the setting one level lower on very dirty areas, but don’t do this too often as it can wear out carpets
- Vacuuming in Multiple Directions– vacuum forward and backward over the same area of the floor before moving to another floor. Then shift the vacuum 9 degrees and repeat it from the side. This will give your vacuum the chance to pick up as much dirt as possible
- Keep Your Vacuum Clean – Empty your vacuum bag / canister as soon as it gets 1/3rd or 1/4th full. Regularly clean the vacuum bristles / brushes, and keep them free of debris. Regularly check vacuum filters and replace them as needed.
- Vacuum Attachments – Use special vacuum attachments as much as possible. Different vacuum attachments can improve suction power in hard to reach areas, crevice attachments can help you better vacuum edges and corners, and upholstery attachments give you better results when vacuuming furniture.
